VERDLEY
BOWLS CLUB
INTRODUCTION
|
Verdley Bowls
Club was formed as part of the ICI Recreation Club at Home Farm
in 1990 and enjoyed its own six rink Green in idyllic
surroundings. It also had the pleasure of using the
adjacent Barn and facilities for dining and recreational
purposes. |
|
In the meantime
ICI became Astro Zeneca and in 2002 changed again to Syngenta
after a merger with the French agrochemical company Novartis.
The Company then moved its business to Switzerland, thus selling
off the Home Farm complex. |
|
Verdley Bowls
Club then became greenless and for the last six years played all
of its matches on its opponents greens. Since 2001 which
was the last season that the club played on it's own green, the
number of fixtures played per season dropped from 62 down to 30
in 2007. This is mainly due to a dwindling membership, one
main reason being that many of its members do not enjoy playing
all of their matches on opponents greens. Membership at
one time numbered over 50, but by 2007 the membership was
reduced to only 20 this being an insufficient number from
which to select two teams and sometimes three teams per week. |
|
Plans for a new
synthetic bowling green at Fernhurst Recreation Ground have been
in the pipeline for a number of years and providing funds become
available it should be ready for the 2009 season. In the
meantime assuming that this will be the case, it has been
decided to suspend all future bowling activities until
confirmation regarding its construction is received.
