2008 Programme

Objects of the Club

To provide companionship and interests for people of pensionable age, and to give them the opportunity of giving service. Apart from companionship it also aims to promote wisdom, information, vitality and good fun for the members.

History of the Club

The Fernhurst Good Companions was originally called the 'Forget-me Nots', and was founded in 1951 for persons of 60 years of age and older from the parish of Fernhurst and surrounding areas.
It was originally a subsidiary of the Red Cross and the first chairman was Mrs. Hollist.
Thirty five members attended the first meeting, subscriptions at that time being one old penny (1d.) with a cup of tea costing three old pennies (3d.).
The name was changed in 1972 and the subscriptions are now £4.00 per annum, but the tea is free!
The Club celebrated its Golden Anniversary in 2001 with a large cake, balloons and a 'knees-up'.

About the Club

Although the Club is not a Registered Charity it is run by a committee of 11 volunteers, all being members of the Club.  Currently the Club has about 75 members, both men and women.  It meets twice monthly on the second and fourth Wednesdays (excepting for August when there are no meetings), in the Fernhurst Village Hall at 2.30pm and the programme each year usually consists
of talks on various subjects by outside speakers, travel talks, quizzes, art/craft and card making sessions, information on topics relevant to the members such as home safety and security, medical/health issues with ploughman's lunches or home-made  teas with the Midhurst Stroke Club.
Mystery coach outings are arranged, some allowing members to paddle in the sea, and some are to local gardens allowing members to sit and relax under the apple trees or, for the more energetic, to flex their muscles and enjoy a game of croquet.
Every year a slap-up  Christmas Lunch is organised, complete with entertainment all of which is free to members.
The Club also has a bookstall and holds regular raffles which, with occasional grants from West Sussex County Council helps maintain the Clubs finances
