Fernhurst May
Revels
- A traditional celebration since the early 1900s the
Village comes together come rain or come shine to witness
the outgoing May Queen, democratically elected by her peers,
crown her successor. The event starts with a
procession of the current May Queen, her successor and their
entourage and the fancy dress entrants through the village.
A short address and the blessing of the May Queen by the
Vicar precedes her crowning followed by an enactment of St
George slaying the Dragon in defence of his Queen.
Finally, the
village schoolchildren dance around the Maypole and the
fancy dress floats and entries in the procession are judged.
This signals the start of the Revels and the Village Fete
commences offering a mix of traditional games, modern stalls
and a variety of entertainments. Traditionally
the outgoing and incoming May Queens and their families
take tea together during part of the afternoon with many
previous May Queens joining (who travel from far and wide) the
new May Queen each year. There can be up to 70 plus
years between the oldest and the youngest May Queen present
at the tea.
