Fernhurst Cubs - Spring Term News

2008 has really got off to a cracking start for Fernhurst Cubs.

We welcome not one but 5 new Cubs this term, 4 who have moved up from Beavers and one new Cub who has just joined the movement. We are now at capacity which is amazing to think that just 3 years ago we only had 7 Cubs!

We started the term with the Cubs working towards their Global Challenge badge. Having found out recently that Juice Cartons (Tetrapaks) can be recycled locally we set about drawing awareness to this by making Viking long boats using old cartons. Thanks to everyone who donated their used cartons but particularly the Gibbons (who managed to collect over 20 cartons in the space of 2 weeks!). Once the boats had their sails set we launched them in the stream outside the hut and watched as they floated toward the bridge - some of them in an upright position!

The other real excitement in January was when we had a visit from the Rubicon Skate School. We watched as Geoff’s van was disgorged of what seemed like a shop full of skateboards, helmets and protective gear but were we grateful for that protective gear once we got started! Geoff worked his way around the varied groups teaching some the basics of how to balance on the board and others new tricks which amazingly many perfected by the end of the evening. We finished off with a demonstration by Geoff of how to leap 5 vertically stacked skateboards from a standing start - amazing!

The term continues with a trip to the Taro Leisure Centre for Swimming and a half term visit to see the pantomime Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood!

With climbing on Liphook Scouts’ climbing wall, a Barn Dance on Saturday 8th March and a camp at Runways End near Farnborough planned for the future there looks to be no let up in the excitement we have planned for the Cubs - watch this space . . .
